The oldest type is a liquid-column manometer.
A very simple version is a U-tube half-filled with liquid.
The object with the pressure to be measured is connected to one part of the tube, while on
the other end of the tube is a reference pressure (e.g. atmospheric).
The difference in the position of the liquid levels in both arms provides information about the measured pressure.
